Kenneth Wagner, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor
Department of Neurology

We are investigating the pathophysiological and pathochemical mechanisms that underlie the development of edema and irreversible brain injury from intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a stroke subtype. To study ICH experimentally, we have developed a clinically relevant large animal (pig) model. Our studies focus on several potential mechanisms for tissue damage, including: hematoma-induced mass effect, ischemia, increased blood-brain-barrier permeability and the "toxicity" of blood components. Our cellular and molecular studies include: neuronal and macroglial cell death, edema, demyelination and axonal injury, and oxidative stress and induced cytokine and heat shock gene expression. We are also developing surgical and pharmacologic treatments for ICH.
